As Memorial Day Weekend approaches, the Ulster County Sheriff's Office is urging residents to prioritize boat safety. Sheriff Juan Figueroa highlighted the importance of wearing life jackets, obtaining a boating safety certificate, and staying sober while on the water. According to the United States Coast Guard, 75% of recreational boating fatalities in 2023 were due to drowning, and 87% of those victims were not wearing a life jacket. Sheriff Figueroa emphasized that having a properly fitted life jacket for everyone onboard is crucial for preventing such tragedies.
New York State Parks and Recreation Director Alexi Howland reminded boaters of Brianna’s Law, which requires all operators of motorized vessels to pass a New York State-approved boating safety course. The law aims to ensure that all boaters have the foundational knowledge necessary for safe operation on the water. Additionally, Sheriff Craig Apple warned against operating a boat under the influence of drugs or alcohol, stating that it is both illegal and dangerous.
NEWS10 ABC reported that several county sheriffs will be on the water this season to ensure compliance with boating laws. As the unofficial start of summer, Memorial Day Weekend marks a busy time on the water, and authorities are committed to keeping waterways safe and enjoyable for everyone.
