New York State Police, in collaboration with local law enforcement, will be stepping up traffic enforcement efforts over the Columbus Day weekend. The initiative, announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, aims to crack down on speeding and impaired driving. The enforcement period began on Thursday, October 10, and will run through Monday, October 14.
The state is expecting increased traffic volumes due to the holiday weekend and fall tourism, which poses additional risks on the roadways. "The tragic consequences of impaired and reckless driving are avoidable if we all make safety our top priority,” Governor Hochul said.
Motorists can expect to encounter sobriety checkpoints and additional driving while intoxicated (DWI) patrols. Law enforcement will also be on the lookout for motorists using their phones and other electronic devices while driving.
During last year’s Columbus Day enforcement period, State Police issued 11,571 total tickets, 4,926 of which were for speeding violations, and arrested 138 individuals for DWI.
The New York State Police urge everyone to enjoy a safe holiday weekend and make the right choice. "These incidents are 100% preventable. Obey the speed limit, designate a sober driver, or plan for a ride share to get home safely. Wear your seatbelt and do not drive distracted. Our message will not change, obey the law," the State Police stated.
