Jens Haaning, a 56-year-old artist, was given around $80k in cash by the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art to use as part of an exhibit they had commissioned him to make; they thought Haaning would be using the banknotes in the art.
The museum, while admitting he had created what they called an ‘interesting artwork,” says they’ll be suing him if he doesn’t return the money by January 16.
Haaning says he made the move in response to poor working conditions at the museum, saying “The work is that I have taken their money.” He says he won’t return the money, as he considers keeping it part of the statement his ‘work’ is making.
