POUGHKEEPSIE – They gathered with lit candles as the sun went down on Sunday evening to honor the life of Quraan Smith, the 16-year-old Arlington High School student who was stabbed to death following a football game on September 17.
At Sunday’s rally, the slain youth’s mother, Na’Tara Smith, said the community support is giving her the inspiration to go on.
“You all have given me the strength each and every day; I feel it. I told a few people how I have been feeling and I have been feeling good despite what has happened to my son,” she said.
The teen was killed during a brawl outside the high school. Police arrested Nestor Ortiz-Ocampo, 18, a former student at the school and charged him with manslaughter.
Funeral services for Quraan Smith will be held at 12 p.m. on Tuesday (tomorrow) at Beth-El Church in Poughkeepsie.
