BEACON – Most of the work on the $101 million re-decking of the north span of the Newburgh-Beacon Bridge should be done in about a year.
The project involves removing all of the decking down to the steel beams and replacing it in the single-most ambitious project in the history of the New York State Bridge Authority.
Spokesman Chris Steber said the work is moving along without a hitch.
“We expect all the work above the deck, which is essentially all the work the public notices, to be done by September 2022. They will be a little bit ahead of the original project and then there will be some residual work like scaffolding removal that will occur in early 2023,” he said.
Since the work began, the southern span of the bridge, which has carried eastbound traffic, was divided to accommodate both directions of travel.
