POUGHKEEPSIE — City Police in Poughkeepsie are investigating a Thursday night shooting that injured one man. The shooting occurred around 10:30 p.m. in the vicinity of 325 Church Street.
City police responded to the shooting and found one victim with a bullet wound to his posterior. Witnesses told police that two or three black men fled the scene heading south. One suspect was said to be wearing a red sweatshirt.
As of 10:40 p.m., Thursday night police officers including at least one K-9 unit were searching the vicinity of Poughkeepsie High School for the suspects.
Common Council Chair Sarah Salem has scheduled a special meeting on August 25 at the ChangePoint Church to discuss the ongoing violence.
“What we are seeing now is an incredible increase to the instances of these events occurring. So, I do appreciate folks wanting to see the meeting happen a bit sooner and that is a valid retort; however, I will state that once we continue these conversations; it is not like conversations are not happening as well. So we have to think of procedural justice committees, there are homeless prevention committees, but what this does is gather all these local organizations and all in one room so the public can pose questions to them,” Salem said.
No additional information was immediately available concerning Thursday night’s shooting.
People who may have information regarding the incident are asked to call the City of Poughkeepsie Police at 845-451-7577.
