NEW YORK – The State Republican Party conducted a “straw poll” in Albany of all county GOP committees throughout the state on who the party’s nominee should be for governor in 2022.
After overwhelmingly winning Monday’s straw poll, Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) was named the presumptive gubernatorial nominee of the Republican Party.
“Since announcing our candidacy for governor, together we’ve built a groundswell of support inside and outside of politics from every corner of our state,” said Zeldin. “For so many New Yorkers, this is a last chance to Save Our State, to return New York from the brink and restore it to glory. Today’s vote underscores that the Republican Party is united in this mission, and in November 2022, we will win because we have to win.”
Incumbent Governor Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat, has not yet expressed his intention to run in next year’s gubernatorial election.
