DEERPARK – Unseasonably warm temperatures on a clear Saturday afternoon turned an otherwise enjoyable spring ride into tragedy for a motorcyclist traveling the historic, winding Route 97 stretch of road known as the Hawk’s Nest.
A popular spot for travelers, increasing numbers of motorcyclists enjoy seasonal weekend rides across the Hawk’s Nest. The region offers rivers, mountains, and other spectacular outdoor views, but also dangers for drivers negotiating the steep, mountainous, rock-wall lined road. MVA’s frequently result when safety protocols are not followed by travelers in both directions.
Sparrowbush Engine Company, State and Town of Deerpark Police, Port Jervis Volunteer Ambulance and Fire Police responded to calls for help just after 4:15 p.m. on Saturday, May 22. Motorists reported the accident as a serious MVA involving a motorcycle.
Following interviews with witnesses and a lengthy on-going investigation at the scene, an official said a motorcycle had been reported by witnesses to have been moving erratically over the Hawk’s Nest and had intersected with a car. This caused the motorcyclist to make contact with a cement wall, resulting in this driver’s fatal injuries.
The Hawk’s Nest has been the scene of numerous accidents and frequent online warnings by drivers familiar with the road to heed speed and caution while enjoying the beauty of this stretch of Route 97.
The road remained blocked off into the evening hours, from the intersection of Route 42/97 in Sparrowbush to the other side of the Hawk’s Nest near Wilson Road. No other injuries were reported.
