KINGSTON – With the clock ticking for Ulster County to find a new source of waste disposal in an about a year-and-a-half, the County Resource Recovery agency has hired a consultant to conduct a study to eliminate areas where a potential landfill would not be suitable.
Executive Director Tim Degraff said following Monday’s agency meeting that the review will seek to rule out inappropriate locations.
“Some of the data sources and variables he is taking into account would be areas protected by New York State DEC, like New York City watershed, the Hudson River, environmental justice communities, and any other protected lands and bodies of water, major roads, highways. They will be looking at topography and soil composition as well,” he said.
The RRA has hired Seth Laxman, a recent SUNY New Paltz graduate who is working for Green Peace to conduct the study at a cost of $400.
