The Texas Rangers named a field at their spring training complex after the late CHARLEY PRIDE. It's called Charley Pride Field and it's located in Surprise, Arizona.
Charley held a part-ownership stake in the team, but his love of the sport started as a player in the 1950s.
He pitched in the Negro Leagues, and the Minor Leagues for the Yankees, Mets, and California Angels organizations . . . until injuries derailed his career. Fortunately, he happened to be an amazing singer so that worked out pretty well.
He lived in Texas and was a huge Rangers fan. They'd let him work out with the team . . . and he staged an annual clubhouse concert for players and staff.
