E-commerce drives up USPS business

MID-HUDSON – While email has been placing a serious dent in the postal service’s first-class mail sales, e-commerce is driving up package deliveries.

Postal Service spokesman George Flood said a number of factors are pushing up those sales.

“Over the years the e-commerce as been bumping up our package volumes and the coronavirus has certainly also bumped up our volume and now we are going into our peak and our package volumes are through the roof, so we actually out there in many of the larger communities delivering seven days a week,” he said.

Flood said in larger communities, packages can be picked up on Sundays if attempts to deliver have failed.

He said while package delivers are up significantly, they do not compensate for the losses in first-class mail.
