ALBANY – The State Public Service Commission has approved requests to sell utility-owned streetlights to two municipalities in the Catskills region. With the change in ownership, the municipalities can control streetlighting and install their own state-of-the-art energy-efficient lights to lower costs to taxpayers and protect the environment.
The Village of New Paltz has been approved to pay $140,520 for 288 streetlights from Central Hudson and the Town of Bethel has been approved to pay $78,835 for 167 streetlights from NYSEG.
Energy-efficient lights – LEDs – use significantly less energy than traditional street lights and can save municipalities up to 65 percent of electricity costs for street lighting.
