Forklift hits gas line, ignites inferno

MIDDLETOWN – A large industrial building in the City of Middletown went up in a ball of flames when a forklift operator hit a natural gas line and it exploded. Mayor Joseph DeStefano said that is what caused the fire in a large commercial building at 9 Midland Avenue around 11 on Thursday morning.
Firefighters battled the cold weather and raging fire that reduced the brick building to rubble.
The mayor said there were no reports of injuries.
Several roads were closed including Wisner between Sproat Street and Linden Avenue as well as North Street between Church Street and Wisner Avenue.
