NEW WINDSOR – The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor in New Windsor was reopened on Veterans Day after being closed for months so that the facility could undergo a 7,000 square foot expansion.
Now triple the original size when first dedicated in 2006, the facility tells the stories of the thousands of Purple Heart recipients and their sacrifices to our country, noted State Lt. Governor Kathy Hochul.
“We can hear those stories, we can relive them, and inspire the next generation, the young students who come here, the scouts or classes from school,” she told a rededication ceremony on Wednesday. “We can inspire people and let them know the beautiful legacy of our military history. Put the human faces behind those stories and get the next generation to feel that same moral responsibility that our patriots had up until now.”
The late State Senator William Larkin was a driving force in the creation of the Hall of Honor and a plaque in his honor was unveiled by his widow, Pat.
The National Purple Heart Hall is just a few miles from Washington’s Headquarters in the City of Newburgh, where General Washington presented the Badge of Military Merit, which later became the Purple Heart medal.
