School bus runs over, kills bicyclist

KINGSTON – A 54-year-old Kingston man, who was riding a bicycle in the bike lane on the right side, parallel to the vehicle lane on Greenkill Avenue in the City of Kingston, was killed Wednesday afternoon when his bike struck the side of the bus, city police said.

The accident occurred around 2:15 p.m. when the bicyclist passed through a stop sign meant for the bike lane and struck the side of the bus as it was making a right turn.

Police said the cyclist fell to the ground and was run over by the bus. He was not wearing a helmet and suffered serious internal injuries. He died at the Health Alliance Broadway campus.

The school bus, owned by Birnie Bus Company, was driven by a 43-year-old Rosendale woman. There were no passengers on the bus. No tickets were issued to the driver.

The crash is being investigated by the Kingston Police Accident Reconstruction Team and Detective Division.
