Serino in lead over Smythe with 30,000 absentee ballots to be counted

Vote pin on absentee ballot application
POUGHKEEPSIE – Republican State Senator Sue Serino holds the lead over Democratic challenger Karen Smythe in a rematch of 2018.
There are some 30,000 absentee ballots that have yet to be counted before a winner is declared.
Serino said the campaign was about uniting the community during these troubled times.
“The COVID pandemic and the nursing homes and all the issues that came along with it were our number one priority, so our campaign was kind of on the back burner,” she said.
While all the votes for the State Senate 41st district race have not been counted, Smythe thanked her supporters on Zoom.
“In some ways, it’s almost better that we don’t have a final result because we would like it to be in our favor,” said Smythe.
“This is going to be a closer election than I would like,” she said. “I would like to think that everyone certainly should understand that the climate crisis is real, that women’s rights are important and that people should be able to vote, but that’s not what this process is.”
