WAPPINGERS FALLS – Mayor Matt Alexander has announced that he is stepping down as mayor in December of this year. The announcement came in a letter to village residents dated October 26.
Alexander first served as a member of the planning board before be coming a trustee representing the second ward in 2006. In 2007 Alexander was elected mayor of the village and has served more than six consecutive terms since then.
The COVID-19 pandemic, according to Alexander, gave him time to assess his tenure. “Over this extraordinary past year, in enforced solitude and decreased mobility, I reflected on my own needs. With great sadness, I am announcing that I will be stepping down as mayor in December to pursue other opportunities.”
The graduate of Notre Dame said in his letter “all good things must come to an end and my service to you has come to that point.” The long-time public servant said that his tenure has been “full of success and failure, joy and grief as well as growth and decline.“
During his time at the top of the village government, Alexander developed his “Top Five Priorities” to address critical needs in the village. The plan called for improvements to the development of The Bleachery, economic development, water supply, protection of Wappingers Lake, and infrastructure including new sewer lines and a water treatment facility.
“Matt Alexander has provided stellar leadership and helped propel Wappingers Falls into a new chapter of vibrancy, growth and success. It has been my pleasure to serve with him and support his vision, team and community. Thank you, Matt, for your leadership, commitment and friendship. We wish much success for you and will continue to work for the village you love,” said Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro.
Alexander, who is a certified public accountant, could not be reached for comment prior to publication.
