NEWBURGH – A 16-year-old Newburgh youth has been arrested in connection with the September 26 daylight shooting of another man.
Newburgh City Police arrested the alleged shooter, whose name they did not release because of his age, on Saturday, October 11.
It is alleged he shot Najoir Byers, 19, just before 6 p.m. on that Sunday. He was uncooperative and provided no assistance throughout the investigation, police said.
The alleged perpetrator was charged with first-degree assault.
“It is very disheartening that this shooting took place in broad daylight and in front of multiple eyewitnesses who most likely knew the identity of the shooter, however refused to cooperate with detectives,” said Police Chief Arnold “Butch” Amthor. “Gun play is a consistent problem here in Newburgh and until the community impacted says it’s had enough of this violence, all the police can do is be reactive and responsive after the fact.”
This incident remains under investigation and anyone with information is asked to call Newburgh City Police at 845-561-3131.
