GARDINER – The state has opened a new visitors center at the Minnewaska State Park Preserve on the Shawangunk Ridge.
A public-private partnership with the Open Space Institute, the new facility welcomes visitors to the 24,000-acre preserve, the site of a former hotel acquired by the state in 1987.
The 5,400-square-foot visitors center provides educational programs and exhibits on the park’s environment and history.
Governor Andrew Cuomo said Minnewaska “is one of New York’s greatest natural treasures, offering matchless views and vast open spaces to explore.” He said the new visitors center “is an essential addition” the park.
OSI President Kim Elliman said the visitors center is “a capstone project” of his organization, “topping off our 40-year history expanding this park and making it more welcoming and enjoyable to visitors.”
