HIGHLAND – A 39-year-old Newburgh man was struck and killed early Saturday while walking on Route 9W in Highland.
State Police said Leon Ponder was walking southbound in the right lane of Route 9W at around 3:44 a.m. when he was struck and killed by a 2014 Toyota Tundra truck that was driving southbound.
The driver saw an individual walking in the middle of the lane and attempted to avoid him. The driver struck Ponder with the passenger side of his vehicle.
State Police and Mobile Life Support Services arrived on the scene and life-saving measures were performed on Ponder, who was transported to MidHudson Regional Hospital in Poughkeepsie where he died.
State Police were assisted at the scene by Town of Lloyd Police and the Highland Fire Department.
The driver of the truck was determined not to be impaired or on his cellphone.
The investigation into the fatal incident is continuing.
