TOWN OF NEWBURGH – A 60-year-old Wappingers Falls man was killed in a three-car crash on eastbound Interstate 84 near the Thruway ramp in the Town of Newburgh on Tuesday afternoon.
State Police identified the victim as Kenneth Kear.
Police said a Toyota Sienna was traveling in the left lane eastbound and slowed down for unknown reasons.
The Sienna was struck in the rear by a U-Haul truck, also going east.
The U-Haul vehicle was then struck by a Mercedes Sprinter van driven by the victim. Kear was extricated from the van by the Orange Lake Fire Department and transported to Montefiore St. Luke’s Cornwall Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The operator of the Toyota van, a 27-year-old Wallkill man, was transported to the hospital for evaluation. U-Haul and the passenger were not injured.
All of the drivers were wearing seatbelts.
State Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash to call them at the Montgomery barracks at 845-457-1388 and speak with Investigator Thomas Garcia.
