MID-HUDSON – An Immigration rights advocate in the region are celebrating the US Supreme Court decision to uphold DACA – the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals – program that the Trump Administration attempted to cancel.
Ignacio Acevedo of Newburgh, regional organizer for Nobody Leaves Mid-Hudson, said it is a major decision.
“It relieves some of the great stress and fear of the individuals who have been eligible for DACA, but it is not the solution. There is so much work ahead of us, but this gives you an ability to breathe,” he said.
Acevedo said young people who have been hiding in the shadows for fear of being arrested or deported can feel a bit of relief, but he said there needs to be a path toward citizenship developed.
The decision “reaffirms that there is no question that home is here for the more than 700,000 Dreamers across the country,” said State Attorney General Letitia James.
