Restaurants and other industries have been open for business in New York, yet eye care establishments in shopping malls have to remain closed to the public if current COVID reopening plans are allowed to continue as is. With children home schooling and adults working remotely, many people are discovering that they need to visit an eye doctor. Though many people are developing vision issues that need immediate attention, they’re forced to wait, simply because, somehow, the ability to see isn’t being considered “essential” by officials.

Pearle Vision centers are ready to follow all CDC protocols to keep their patients and staff safe.As a matter of fact, eye treatment doesn’t require anywhere near as much time as sitting down to a meal at an enclosed, crowded restaurant.

Additionally, most malls provide more vast open space that allows for easier social distancing than many other business locals that have been allowed to open.Spacious suburban malls like the Poughkeepsie Galleria should not be lumped into the same category as New York City. It makes little sense for the government to impose one size fits all re-opening policies on all establishments, regardless of their dimensions and size of the population being served.

Lastly, countless employees need their salaries to support their families. Opening now is the key to survival for many of the mall’s businesses and the survival of their staff and our local economies.

We implore the State to reconsider its decision and allow shopping malls to be open alongside other retailers in “phase two” in the Mid-Hudson region.
