State Police to get body cams, Newburgh councilman pleased

NEWBURGH – Many area municipal police forces employ body cameras to record interactions between officers and the community, but until now, the State Police do not have them.
Newburgh City Councilman Omari Shakur said Governor Cuomo’s announcement that body cams are in the works for troopers is a step in the right direction.
“The last two police chiefs we had in Newburgh we had this conversation and I told them when the community comes to me with a story, I got that story and when the police come to you with your story, you have their story. So, if we have the body cam, that tells the truth. That’s why we need the body cams. If you are not doing anything wrong, you should want a body cam because it protects you; it saves you too,” he said.
The City of Newburgh has been using body cams for the last couple of years.
