GOSHEN – Two Committees of the Orange County Legislature Monday voted to offer county employees an early retirement incentive plan in an effort to save taxpayer money.
Their vote came after county Human Resources Commissioner Steven Gross presented details of the plan saying 1,200 of the county’s workers would be eligible, however, he does not anticipate everyone availing themselves of the deal.
“Anything you can save through these programs is going to be helpful for the county in the future not only as we finish the 2020 budget, but prepare the 2021 budget going forward,” he said.
The lawmakers also approved creating a voluntary temporary layoff program for up to two months, which would save the county funding by not paying their salaries, which would be picked up by the federal government.
The votes by the Personnel and Compensation and Ways and Means Committees were unanimous.
The full legislature will vote on the two plans during a special session called for Thursday, May 21.
