Why....Are There Indentations on the Bottom of a Wine Bottle?

Have you ever wondered why the bottom of your wine bottle has ridges....indentations? LOL....no? Well, if you did, here's why, as my week of 'why' continues.

The ridges / indentations are there to help evenly distribute the pressure of the product inside the bottle during the corking process. The bottoms and sides are weak spots, so this helps even things out. I'm thinking this helps if you drop the bottle, in error, preventing it from breaking it so easily, since it's glass....?

Well....that's why!
