After losing their father last fall while he waited for a kidney transplant, two sisters each decided to donate a kidney to total strangers to make sure other families didn’t have to suffer like that. Mark Goralski passed away in September 2018 after a long battle with Crohn’s disease and kidney failure. His daughter, Bethany, was ready to donate a kidney to him, but doctors said he wasn’t healthy enough for a transplant.
So Bethany and her sister, Hannah, decided to give the gift of life to a stranger in honor of their father. They called Northwestern Memorial Hospital and had their surgeries about a day apart, donating a kidney to someone in need they had never met.
“We just want to make sure two less families had to go through what we went through,” Bethany says. “I hope he would be really proud.”
