One School "Rebranded" Mother’s Day …To Keep From Offending Anyone
While most of us celebrated Mother’s Day this weekend, one school in Australia had their kids celebrating a very different holiday. Seems the school has rebranded both Mother’s Day and Father’s Day so as not to offend anyone.
The Brunswick East Primary School recently explained in their newsletter that following “a lot of discussion” with staff, parents and students, they’ve decided they are no longer going to celebrate Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, so as to not offend any “non-binary parents.”
Instead the school explained they decided to rebrand the holidays “Acknowledgement Day” in an effort to be “as inclusive as possible.” The principal added, “I sincerely hope that this change in name will show that we as a community recognize that our families are not made up of any particular combination of people and that we no longer subscribe to a binary world.”
Many parents seemed to support the change, with one noting, “Some kids, for whatever reason, may not have a mother in their lives, so I don’t mind if they broaden the stall so those kids feel included.” But as you can imagine, not everyone is on board, with the Australian Liberty Alliance suggesting it undermines the idea of a traditional family. They note, “We believe the natural family is the core building block of human society and must be protected.”
