Sue Adams is coming to share her book, What Do Your Flowers Say Today?
And tell us all about floriography, the language of flowers! Floriography was popular during the Victorian-era as a means of communication in which flowers were used to send coded messages, allowing individuals to express feelings which otherwise could not be spoken. Let's go back in time and not only enjoy the beauty of flowers, but also their meanings, and learn how flowers can help us in our everyday lives.
Locust Grove is happy to be growing the same peony flowers and other perennial bulbs that the Young family planted here over 100 years ago. Among them are a native violet, different from the African Violet variety we are selling, but abundant and much anticipated as a harbinger of spring every year at Locust Grove. Locust Grove foundress Annette Innis Young (1885 – 1975) painted some of these native violets on a valentine card, shown here, around 1920. What do you think about that?
After a brief lecture, Sue Adams will conduct flower readings for a lucky few raffle winners! (Every ticket holder will get a raffle ticket at the door.)
The Museum Shop will be selling signed copies of her book for $25.00, with profit to benefit Locust Grove.
Who is Sue Adams?
Sue Adams is vice-president of Adams Greenhouses, a five-acre operation in Poughkeepsie. She is an award-winning container designer, graduate of Cornell University, president of New York State Flower Industries, serves on the New England Floriculture Board.
