Airline Passenger Opens Emergency Door Because The Cabin Was 'Too Stuffy'

A passenger on a Xiamen Airlines flight from Wuhan Tianhe International Airport to Lanzhou, China was arrested after she decided to open the emergency exit door next to her seat while the plane was on the runway waiting to take off. The unidentified woman complained that the cabin was "too stuffy" and explained that she wanted a "breath of fresh air."

Flight attendants had just briefed the woman on her expectations in case of an emergency and warned her not to pull the lever to open the door. When the flight attendant turned around to assist another passenger, the woman popped open the door, sparking chaos and confusion in the cabin as stunned passengers were unsure what to do.

The woman was taken into custody while officials secured the door and carried out a second security screening of the plane, which caused the flight to be delayed by one hour.

Authorities have not disclosed what charges the woman will face but according to the South China Morning Post, opening the emergency exit door is treated as disturbing the public order, which is punishable with fines and jail time.
