CLAVERACK – A large fight at the Brookwood Secure Center for Youth brought several police officers to the facility early Wednesday afternoon around 1:35 p.m. to restore peace.
The facility on Spook Rock Road in the town of Claverack is operated by the NYS Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS), housing male and female youths, called juvenile offenders, who, while under the age of 16, and now 16 and 17 years of age, called adolescent offenders as part of “Raise the Age”, committed certain violent felonies and were convicted and sentenced in adult criminal court or family court as part of Raise the Age legislation. Depending upon the sentence, youth may remain in OCFS custody up to 21 years of age.
According to the NYS Police, law enforcement quickly gained control of the situation and the facility was been secured. Three staff members suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital for treatment. None of the residents were injured.
The City of Hudson Police Department, New York State Park Police, Chatham Police Department, New York State Environmental Conservation Police, Greenport Police Department, Claverack Fire Department, and the Columbia County Emergency Medical Services, Columbia County Fire Coordinator Office, and multiple EMS agencies assisted at the scene.
This investigation remains ongoing, according to the State Police, and will be updated as soon as additional information becomes available.
