ALBANY – The State Public Service Commission has approved the sale of the Indian Point nuclear power facility to Holtec International subsidiaries.
The unanimous vote came Wednesday following a negotiated agreement between the state, County of Westchester, local governments, Public Utility Law Project, Riverkeeper, Entergy and Holtec, which provides for the transfer of the power facility to Holtec for a swift, complete and safe decommissioning and site remediation.
The vote followed comments from Deputy PSC Counsel John Sipos.
“Holtec has experience in the field of spent nuclear fuel management and has previously worked at Indian Point under a contract with Entergy. The established working relationship between Holtec and Entergy should assist in a smooth transition,” he told the commission. “Holtec has furthermore been approved by the NRC to decommission two other nuclear facilities, Oyster Creek Generating Station in New Jersey and Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station in Massachusetts.”
The State Department of Public Service also announced the formation of the Indian Point Nuclear Decommissioning Oversight Board to ensure compliance with the joint proposal’s conditions and other regulatory standards.
