FISHKILL – Seven rear back porches at the Village at Merritt Park off Merritt Boulevard in the Village of Fishkill were intentionally set on fire late Sunday night, State Police said Monday.
At around 10:13 p.m., first responders were called to the scene where the porches, which had paper products stored for recycling were set on fire at the 200, 400, and 800 buildings. Each building houses 24 apartments.
All families in the 200 building were displaced due to extensive damage. Damage was minor to the 800 building and damage appears mostly limited to the exterior of the 400 building.
All occupants were evacuated safely and no injuries were reported. The Red Cross arrived to assist ten families totaling 24 adults and two children who were displaced.
“What would motivate someone to do this is unclear at this time, but we will be working tirelessly to find out who did this and why. The community can expect to see a higher police presence in the area,” said Captain John Ryan, acting State Police Troop K Commander.
Anyone with information regarding this investigation is asked to contact the New York State Police at (845) 677-7300.
Fishkill Village Police, State Police, the Dutchess County Cause and Origin Team and several mutual aid departments were on the scene.
