Romeo Cox was so determined to visit his grandmother, he didn’t let little things - like a quarantine, or the fact there were no flights happening, or that she was in England and he was in Italy - stop him!
The 10-year-old had moved to Sicily and hadn’t seen his granny in a year and a half, so he came up with a plan and tried to get his parents on board. They told him “no” about 50 times before agreeing that he could make the trip with his dad, as long as everything was COVID-safe.
The ambitious boy planned their route, which was mostly on foot “to help the planet,” he says. Lucky for Romeo, his father, Phil Cox, is a veteran journalist and filmmaker with experience covering war zones, so he knows how to get around in less than ideal conditions.
They set off on June 20th, trekking across Italy, Switzerland and France while sleeping under the stars along the way. They fought off wild dogs, stopped to volunteer at a refugee camp, and kept walking, eventually arriving in London on September 21st.
After mandatory two-weeks in isolation, Romeo finally got to see his Grandma Rosemary and get the hug he’d been walking three months for.
Along with the heartwarming reunion, he also raised over $18-thousand in donations for the Refugee Education Across Conflicts Trust with his journey.
