Orange County considers diversity intervention initiative

GOSHEN – Orange County legislators took the first step toward creating a diversity intervention initiative by issuing a request for proposals to hire a consultant.
Lawmakers, meeting in the Rules Committee on Wednesday supported the proposal advanced by Michael Amo.
There is concern about ongoing diversity issues in various parts of the county, in particular the Monroe area where the Hasidic Village of Kiryas Joel and Town of Palm Tree are located.
Legislator Katie Bonelli such an initiative could be used to ease tensions.
“It is very interesting and quite frankly very sad that we are dealing with other tensions throughout the county as well as throughout the nation, and I think the time is right to move forward on this, to at least, get an idea what is out there, what resources may be there,” she said.
The county will allocate $100,000 to cover costs if they do select a consultant to develop the initiative.
