TOWN OF WALLKILL – The latest protest rally and march in support of Black Lives Matter resulted in the complete closure of the Route 211 shopping center corridor from Tower Drive in the Town of Wallkill to the Middletown City line at Wisner Avenue.
An estimated 500 people gathered at the Hanaford’s supermarket parking lot in Wallkill, marched up the hill to Wallkill Town Hall where a rally was held.
Among the speakers was Emily Mateo of Bullville.
“I’m here to stand with black lives matter because they do matter, because we have to unite as a people and say enough is enough, no through violence, but through voting, and not just for the presidency but the local elections as well to stop the injustice, because that is what we want. We are one people under God. He didn’t make us different; he made one people,” she said.
From town hall the attendees marched to Route 211 where police had already shut down the highway to motor vehicle traffic as a precaution to protect the marchers.
There have been dozens of protests and rallies large and small across the region since George Floyd was killed in Minneapolis. Four police officers there have been arrested and charged in connection with his death.
