ALBANY – Unemployment in the Hudson Valley has reached 14.2 percent in April, up from 3.3 percent in April 2019 because of the economic shutdown prompted by the deadly coronavirus.
Orange County had the highest unemployment rate in the region, at 15.6 percent. One year ago, the rate was 3.4 percent.
Greene County had a 14.8 percent rate of joblessness in April. Ulster County’s rate of unemployment was 14.6 percent.
Dutchess, Putnam and Westchester County all had 14.1 percent rates of joblessness.
Rockland County had a rate of 13.4 percent while Sullivan County’s rate was 13.1 percent.
In April 2020, there were 156,200 people unemployed in the Hudson Valley, up from 37,100 in April 2019.
The region’s April 2020 unemployment rate of 14.2 percent is the highest in the history of the current series, dating back to 1990.
