POUGHKEEPSIE – Police in the City of Poughkeepsie had their hands full Tuesday night with large crowds gathering in two locations. In one incident, a dirt bike operator was involved in a serious accident at the intersection of Baker Street and Worrall Avenue and later died. That accident is under investigation.
That incident began around 7:16 p.m. when officers were called to a group of over 200 unruly people in the streets. Several were riding ATVs and motorcycles around streets and yards driving recklessly and taunting officers.
Mayor Rob Rolison didn’t mince words about the incident.
“Had that party not happened (Tuesday) night, the individual who lost his life on that dirt bike would not have happened. That person would not have been there. He wouldn’t have been on the arterial highway on that dirt bike and wouldn’t have gotten in an accident. That party caused this man to lose his life in addition to whatever else was going on with his driving,” Rolison said.
About an hour-and-a-half earlier, police were called to a large number of people gathered in the area of Fox Terrace and South White Street. Officers found some 50 or more people gathered with several vehicles parked illegally and impeding traffic. Officers addressed the issues by speaking with several people.
