MID-HUDSON – Congressman Sean Patrick Maloney (D, NY-18) Thursday stood in the center of what used to be a bridge over the Moodna Creek in Washingtonville and adjacent to what was left of the East Hook Road Bridge in East Fishkill.
Both bridges were decimated by the storm last week that dumped massive amounts of rain in the wake of Tropical Storm Ida.
Maloney said state and federal experts have estimated destruction of public infrastructure and property of over $50 million.
“I have been working closely with local officials, communicating with the White House and Governor’s Office to get our towns, villages, and counties the federal resources we need to make a full recovery,” Maloney said. “We have made good progress in the last week, and more help is on the way.”
“The heavy flooding led to us declaring a state of emergency and closing schools,” said Washingtonville Mayor Joseph Bucco. “Some of our residents lost everything and continue to live in fear of flooding.”
Maloney and fellow Representative Antonio Delgado (D, NY-19) Thursday urged President Biden to stand ready “to expeditiously approve Individual Assistance and other aid to the governments, small businesses, and residents of Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Sullivan and Ulster counties.”
